People want to use it with some people and not others, so it’s good to have controls so. They should be able to turn it on or off. However, this is only true if both of you use iMessage on iPhones. Yes, read receipts shouldn’t be mandatory for users. When you send a message, a grey checkmark appears next to the time stamp. If you see a green bubble, that could indicate someone has blocked you, especially if your chats with this person used to be blue. One interesting characteristic is that is doesn't occur with every text message, regardless of it being text or multimedia. WhatsApp Read Receipts look like checkmarks. It may be triggered by the sender's option setting to request a read receipt, but there WAS at one time a way for me to not be bothered with the "confirmation of read reports" pop-up screens. Not so, only his gray box information changes, which he says he ignores, since it's on every text message. I thought that me selecting OK each time I saw that message would result in him receiving a ton of message confirmation texts from me. The option for me to select whether or not "confirmation of read reports" would be shown was a convenience for me not to be bothered by the pop-up, since the grey boxed status items would be shown on the sender's phone regardless. Apparently, his Messages+ texts have a small grey box under a message he has sent me showing it is sending, sent, delivered or read. I reviewed this with someone who uses Messages+ (I'm only using Messages). ![]() It's not a matter of me selecting "Show When Delivered", as that is me requesting confirmation of a message I've sent to someone as having been read. Here are the simple instructions you can follow to check the settings on whichever Apple device you happen to be using: iOS: Go to Settings > Messages and tap the toggle next to Send Read Receipts. I can't find that menu option anywhere in my settings now (it's not in Message/./Settings/More Settings/Text or Multimedia Messages). ![]() There used to be a menu option for me to select whether or not the "confirmation of read reports" pop-up would be shown on my S10. ![]()
